People who know where I have been and where I come from often ask how I turned my life around, how Mr. Texas the brand came to be, or sometimes they are just curious about the company. Today I am going to share with you a small piece of my story.
My knowledge of country cooking started with my Pa Pa Robert Lee Stone he was from Point Blank Texas. On the weekends he would take me to buy double yolk eggs, possums, goats, raccoons, squirrels, and an occasional armadillo; His pig feet were the best! I remember one day asking my grandfather how come my cooking don’t taste like his? His response was, “season your food the way you like it not like Pa Pa” and he said, always watch the fire horse (that’s my nickname). All the men in our family can cook wild game. My Uncle Michael, Uncle Robert, Uncle Ernest, My cousins Brian and Robert Stone THE 3RD Also known as Tinka!
At the age of 12, my grandfather said Horse go pick them sticks up out the yard, I’m going to teach how to BBQ! I questioned him very respectfully about the sticks he said horse those sticks is pecan wood we gone cook with that. While teaching me to BBQ he made clear this was a skill he was giving me and one day I could use it if I ever needed extra money to help my family; I guess Pa Pa was prophetic!
Much time passed and my life took a different direction. At eighteen years old I joined a gang, started hustling, and making bad decisions. I was shot, stabbed, and surrounded by much violence. In 1997 I went to prison for selling drugs (www.bighomieministries.com). While in prison I began to turn my life around and value the things my grandfather taught me far beyond BBQ; He had real wisdom. I was going to use the skill that Pa Pa taught me to do right. I paid a fellow inmate a case of top ramen to draw me a BBQ van, and that’s where the vision began.
When released from prison a few years later, I met an OG Big Homie named Smokey from Fresno California, the Best Pit Master on the planet and I mean that! He took me under his wing, taught me about seasonings, and bottling products. He helped polish the seed my grandfather planted many years ago! In 2014 I wrote on paper my recipe for the All-Purpose Seasoning, and continued perfecting it.
Many people in my community struggled with health, so it was always my mission to keep the products low in sodium and as natural as possible.
Soon after my daughter, Lorraine Stone - MBA, Pa Pa’s great-granddaughter, became the Owner of Mr. Texas BBQ. As for me I’m chilling, cooking, rapping, and enjoying peace after a long journey. Who would have thought what started with my Pa Pa teaching me how to cook, is now a family legacy.
Not just in our family but yours too, and all the families our products give back to (The Big Homie Program). Thank you to all that support Mr. Texas products, may they bring your family joy!
Happiness and health to all
